MWH Soft hosted its third International Geoengineering Conference in Broomfield, Colorado, entitled Advances in Geospatial Infrastructure Modeling and Management Technology on August 8-9, 2005. The conference drew full house attendance with a remarkable group of engineering and GIS professionals who came to share their knowledge and experience. The conference featured keynote addresses from Jack Dangermond (President of ESRI, the world's leader in GIS software applications), Rob Casey, a leading European figure in hydraulic network modeling, Trent Schade, a national authority in urban drainage, and Dr. Don J. Wood a world-renowned expert in the field of water distribution engineering. Presenters from major utilities and top engineering firms in North Americas and Europe rounded out the event with a wide variety of innovative solutions to real-world problems.

The International Geoengineering Conference (IGC) provides an interactive forum for presenting the state of the art in water and wastewater infrastructure geoengineering; facilitating ongoing cooperation and exchange of technological innovations and proven solutions; and discussing the issues, regulatory activities and technological challenges that face the geoenvironmental community. This year's conference was sponsored by the US Environmental Protection Agency and twenty-four of the nation's top engineering and technology firms, including Americec, Avtex, Azteca, Black & Veatch, Burns & McDonnell, Carollo, CDM, Earth Tech, Elber De Jesus Hernandez Ingenieria Civil & Ambiental, ESRI, Flow Science, HACH, HDR, HYDRANNT Consulting, IDModeling, Khatib & Alami, KYPIPE LLC, Lenocker & Associates, MWH, PBS&J, So & Associates, TAG, West Yost & Associates, and Woolpert. Some of the industry's most prominent water and wastewater modelers were on hand to discuss the latest technological innovations, real-world strategies, practical solutions, proven infrastructure protection measures, and technical information. The conference was co-chaired by Denver Water, Colorado, the Regional Municipality of Niagara, Canada, and Thames Water, England.

During two days of content-rich gatherings, the conference offered attendees thirty-two carefully selected state-of-the-art, real-world situations, presented by experts from around the world. Topics covered the latest advances in transient analysis and GIS-centric real-time modeling and control applications; development of improved water quality models; design of effective unidirectional flushing programs; and construction and calibration of large-scale water and sewer dynamic hydraulic models. Experts also discussed the management of urban runoff and wet weather water quality problems in combined, sanitary and storm sewers to optimize BMP and LID designs and meet SSO and CSO regulations, optimize system design, rehabilitation and expansion and operations, and improve infrastructure security. The event also looked at the latest developments in other critical areas, including innovative master planning technologies and the role of GIS and Asset Management in improving business performance.

The conference receives glowing testimonials from all attendees. "Thank you for organizing such a successful conference," said Nathan Walker, water and wastewater modeling specialist for HDR "The technical presentations were unparalleled and mark a significant contribution to the water and wastewater industry. As always, it was a pleasure to meet with colleagues who share a passion for quality and innovation."

According to the conference co-chair Jeffrey T. Cowburn, AScT, design technologist and hydrotechnical specialist for the Regional Municipality of Niagara, Canada, this year's conference was the best yet. "There are challenging times ahead for all of us involved in the water & wastewater industry and this event provides an open and cooperative environment in which to share advanced and innovative methods of water and wastewater modeling. Both the organization of this year's conference and the quality and content of presentations were first rate."

Here's what attendees have said about IGC 2005:

"This conference has established itself as the flag bearer for introducing the latest technologies and upcoming regulations affecting infrastructure modeling and master planning projects. The speakers included a long list of world renowned authorities on hydraulic modeling and surge analysis, covering a wide spectrum of topics on technical subjects, project management, and client management. I especially liked MWH Soft's professionalism and their effort to facilitate networking between the attendees throughout the conference while maintaining a fun environment. I am looking forward to next year's conference."
Carollo Engineers, CA

"This was the most relevant conference that I've attended. The presentations at most conferences are too generalized, however, almost every presentation at this conference included useful information, such as approaches to correct the topology and allocate demands, number of field calibration tests, and typical duration of water age models. It's also good to know that everyone else is facing the issues that we are with the development of an all-pipe model and integrating databases. Thanks."
City of Longmont, CO

"The conference was well coordinated/organized and was an excellent learning opportunity with exceptional coverage of modeling technologies."
Las Vegas Valley Water District, NV
